E for economy maybe? A lot of cars around then had some sort of arrangement where you could change the shift points for better acceleration or better mileage.

I read in Motor Trend or R&T some years ago about a Corvette where the only purpose of one of the shift positions was to squeak by some threshold in the mileage ratings -- gas guzzler or luxury tax or some such.
