from the Bentley: ((Rabbit/Jetta 1977 through 1984 Diesel) "The VW "E-mode" automatic transmission has an extra selector lever position designated "E" (for economy)... With the selector lever at E, the declutching valve, build into the kickdown valve is opened by the accelerator cable whenever the accelerator is returned to it's fully up position. The release of hydraulic pressure by the declutching valve causes the forward clutch of the transmission to disengage, thus allowing the engine to return to idle while the vehicle coasts, or "freewheels" (it is this freewheeling that provides the improvement in fuel economy). When the accelerator is again depressed, the declutching valve is closed and the forward clutch is reengaged."
