The machinist I used to know who lived in his machine shop did it surreptitiously. Likewise when (long story) he had to kip in the foundry across the street -- he had to pretend to be the night watchman or some such. Then he came to live at my house (I told you it was a long story -- live power lines knocked down with one of his trailers, an angry roof-truss mfr and an even angrier mob guy who took direct action), and I was ready for him to go a long time before he was. ;-) As everyone who knew him said, "A great guy but he uses up his friends."

So you might want to check the zoning regulations...
