I was thinking of doing the same thing, in the San Francisco Bay Area, because I would like to get rid of my commute car and save on the insurance and repair bills for having another vehicle.

However, my round trip five days a week would be about 60 miles per day, and our Syncro gets lousy fuel mileage. (I drive to public transit, and then take the transit to San Francisco.) With my commute car I get high enough fuel mileage that I typically don't fill up for almost two weeks. The syncro I would fill at least once a week and sometimes more. Also, my morning commute is almost all stop and go, 30mph or so. I am used to driving a Vanagon (since 1986), but sometimes in commute traffic they are tiresome. It has the original motor and with such a slow commute a more powerful motor is not an issue. We'll probably upgrade someday.

I am having the same dilemma, I guess. There is also the wear and tear on the Syncro, and they don't exactly grow on trees. Ours is 7-passenger (I do not want a camper at this time), and we have used it to camp. I do like the visibility in my commute due to sitting up higher, and just the comfort factor in general. I am not sure I like using the extra fuel and the wear and tear, however.
