 Let me chime in on this one for a minute.  I'd second Scot's suggestion on
checking the throttle switch settings.  The only time I've had similar
symptoms it was a mis adjusted throttle switch, gave exactly the kind of
problems Mike is describing.  That was on a stock 2.1L with a different
setup on the throttle position switch than Mike's 1.9L but same symptoms.
