yes, but on WHICH tdc ? - the piston comes up on both compression and end of intake/start of exhaust. You watch # 3 valves to tell when it's on # 1 tdc on compression. You can also look at the cam lobes - they need to be pointing down for it to be on compression, the lobes for # 1.

Just to confirm, I double checked my '75-'92 VW Rabbit Haynes. Says the same as you wrote for timing marks on the SOHC engine. I can't say for sure if same for Tiico though.

Spark plug wires correct?

Are both valves closed on #1 when rotor at #1?

Is there an inspection hole to look for TDC indicator on flywheel?

And to be sure, are you counting cylinders from drivebelt to tranny?
