The main reason the Weber progressive runs bad cold is that there is no heat under the manifold. The fuel just puddles in there until it slugs into the cylinders and washes the oil off the cylinder walls. This is why the beetle upright engines had the exhaust gas runner under the manifold and all the type 2 pancake engines had dual carburetors. Even after the engine warms up in cold-damp weather this carburetor will ice up internally and will shut down even on the highway. To use this mess in winter you'll need an electric heater under the manifold and an air filter set up that can take in warm air.

For the thermostat, beetle stats are still available and I use a cable crimp to connect the cable to the threaded top in place of the beetle linkage. This keeps the fail to open set up intact.

Hello All

Daisy, '82 Westy, does not like to run cold. I bought it with a weber conversion kit, which runs great when it is warm. Currently it takes about 10 minutes at idle to warm up.

My thermostat is gone, but I have all the other essentials, boxes, flaps, etc.

A couple of questions: Are there any thermostats on the market that work well (oem replacements) How does the Mexican replacement work (spring unit)? I understand this unit fails closed, which bothers me...

Is there an easy way to install a manual system (like a manual choke)

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions and input.

Frank -82 Westy - Daisy
