The detent you feel when working the shifter is actually in the transmission. When the pan is removed look up and you will see where the shift cable moves the lever and the spring loaded roller that goes click when it is moved. You will then see that spool piece that moves in the valve body which does the gear selection work except for the parking pawl.

Thanks, Dennis. The only trick then is to figure a way to add an 'E' spot on the shifter. Pardon my ignorance bur is the detent on the shift console?
