Damn! I had a hatchroof camper (mine was a '63) that looked just like that, complete with roof rack! Not the van's fault that I did not know how to search for hidden rust when buying such a vehicle. My 1960 Falcon and the later Pinto, Maverick and Focus come to mind. The Beetle made few inroads in our suburban Detroit neighborhood of the 60's- career suicide to drive one to your Big Three auto job. VWs strategy of offering a basic model with few yearly changes or improvements certainly originated in Dearborn. I recall a few Ford employees driving tiny little Fords built in British and German factories.
