Wyoming is a good state for your accident to have occurred in. They are
still small and don't have a very convoluted bureaucracy for the US. They
still sometimes even use common sense (like that Wamsutter State Trooper)
When I last lived there it was legal to go to the drive-up window of a
liquor establishment and buy a 'to-go cocktail'...and drive away with it in
your hand, drinking it, as long as you didn't get drunk behind the wheel.
The main rule was "cows have the right away, always". There was just one Wy
Highway Patrol officer in the whole northwest corner of the state...and he
was a real jerk with a 'small-man complex'. He once tried to halt a bicycle
race, the Logan to Jackson 200+ miler, because he wanted each bike to fully
stop at the only stop sign on the whole race route..He pulled his sidearm
and was threatening to shoot...as bikes whizzed past him ignoring his
command to "Halt! Halt!"
If I have it right, the whole state of Wyoming has about 25k fewer people
than the city of Portland, Or. So they sometimes still have the time and
patience to make logical decisions.
If you have an attorney on retainer, you are already noted, in your claim
file at the insurance company, as a 'special case'. Having an attorney
already advanced you past the 'by rote' insulting offers and half-serious
attempt to bamboozle you into signing off on settlement..."right now, so we
can send you the check...." etc. It has been worthwhile, in some of my
dealings with big insurance, to pay the fee to the attorney and have him
send or call the insurance guys on your behalf...Costs you, but they will
listen to the lawyer and they'll probably just 'file' any interaction with
you as a normal claimant...
As has been said..be patient, it will likely take more time than you
imagine and be a frustrating experience . You'll get unsatisfactory results
if you let yourself get 'fed up' with the whole process and try to rush it.
Insurance companies count on that attitude. They factor it into how they
treat claims.
