I helped Bob one day in Portal, Arizona when he was having trouble with the starter in his bus. I did the quick whack and cleaned the terminals and vroom vroom, farfagmagic happened.

I usually called or visited over the years there in Portal. Generally two or three calls a year. I called last week to the old number there in Portal to wish a best of the Solstice and see how he was getting on. Number has recently been disconnected, robovoice said. Bob left no forwardiing number. But if on a clear cold desert night you look up in just the right place, you might catch Bob and Ed Abbey laughing around a pinon campfire. Bob was a defender.

As usual for those interested a web search for Bob Waldmire will tell the rest of the story. The Chicago Sun Times has a video.
