Isn't this the same basic square 4-cylinder engine that Subaru has used for decades? My 1987 had that engine. During its early miles it developed a knock, and the dealer's fix was to tighten the timing belts (there are two). The dealership kept doing this every time the knock came back, while telling me that there was nothing wrong. Well, at 15k miles a belt broke at highway speed. No damage to the engine. Subaru refused to pay for towing and new belts, claiming belts are a "wear item." It took two years of correspondence, during which I moved to another state. Eventually, Subaru paid up, with some small additional compensation, stating in a letter to me that they had received "poor quality materials from a supplier," and that quite a number of owners had been affected.

Again, there was NO DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE FROM THE BROKEN BELTS, and once the original factory belts were replaced, I drove the car many, many miles with no further problem, which gives some credence to Subaru's claim.
