I agree with Mr. BZ The answer to this question all depends on the Vanagon and its owner. I'd love a Go Westy or Benny Boy type restored bus. I cannot afford it. Therefore I take my chances and gamble what I am willing to. It helps to learn a bit of mechanics so you can do some work yourself. on our recent 1000 mile round trip (first real long trip on my self installed new to me engine) we blew a coolant hose. Luckily I was in close proximity to friend and list member Greg Potts - who along with another friend who has a bay came to our rescue. As I said before being 4 hours from home in a foreign country and still having friends who can help within 20 minutes is exactly why I drive a Vanagon. It all depends on what someone is looking for and willing to put up with.
