I had that happen with my '85 - what had happened is that the weld had cracked on the pin on the van that the latch goes against, and when that was fixed, I had the door pop open a few times - the first bump, it would go to the "latched" state, the next, it would open. I ended up replacing the latch mechanism inside the sliding door. It's a little fiddly, but not that bad, really. Don't know that I'd want to do it in the Winter, mind you :o)
