From my driver's seat, the factory vans (especially campers) with manual steering can be a handful in gusty crosswinds. The factory setup is acceptable in low speed maneuvering (parking lots, etc) with the stock 185R14 tires, but not so good with larger tires. With my 215/75-15 tires, power steering is worth the trouble for the crosswind performance alone. For perspective, I lived for two years in the California desert where turbulent 50 MPH crosswinds are common.
