With all due respect, IMO it really depends on the person. I don't recall my exact mindset prior to starting my first swap (DIY "home brew" ABA/Motronic 2.9), but FWIW, I know I would have been insane to take on a TDI as a newb. Knowing more now, I could likely tackle a TDI w/o melting too many parts. But that's now. Not then. :)

I'd suggest to a DIY swap newb to consider tackling a simpler swap first. Maybe an AAZ TD. Once the mechanical mysteries are unveiled and buttoned up, tackling a wiring harness etc., would be much less daunting.
