A natural concern with an older vehicle but I try to bear in mind that most of the big stuff that can go wrong does so only after giving some indication of a problem for a period of time. The small stuff can also stop you cold but a few tools and spares are usually enough to make you self-sufficient when those occur.

AAA Premium includes 200 miles of towing. If you want to get back to using it why not get that coverage and start with shorter trips. Seems like there should be a lot of good places w/i 200 miles of your locale. If you get thru a few of those trips w/o surprises then perhaps you'll have the peace of mind to try a long ride.
