Complex things fail in complex ways... keep it simple!

Why why why does everyone insist on complicated pumps and electronics to manage two fuel tanks?  The solution costs about $60 - all you need is a dual tank fuel valve like this one: http://www.carparts.com/autoparts/ItemBrowse/c-10618/s-10401/p-100000219616/mediaCode-CP/appId-100000219616/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:100000219616

If you really want to be clever, you can put a 2nd fuel level sender in the aux tank so you know when it is empty.
