Regarding testing a trans out of the car..Kinda iffy to really tell much,
but there are several ways to help decide..
Turn the input shaft and see if there is an discernable noise or roughness
you can feel. Roughness will be mainshaft bearing likely.
Grab the input shaft and pull and push hard in and out.. If there is any
clunking play, the mainshaft bearing is moving in the gear housing (front
end of trans). That means the thing MAY pop 4th or at the least, will tell
you it's getting tired. Every trans I rebuild gets a re-bushed housing for a
reason..They are all tired after all these years, so beware.
Turning the flanges will turn the diff And mainshaft, so anything you hear
will likely be the MS bng and not he diff.
Take the bell housing off and look deep in at the Pinion head..That's the 6
or 7 tooth gear that turns the Ring gear (30 some teeth).
The ring gears seldom wear, but look like they are..If the pin teeth are
smooth and shiny with NO pits, your good to go.
Turning the input shaft while shifting will tell you that it does, in fact
shift. If 3rd or 4th is very notchy or feels glitch after a few tries, then
maybe the 3/4 hub is already cracked. Dry shifting them is of no use..They
all feel a bit different.
That’s all I can think of currently, but my theory is that if all feels
good, then slap her in and try it..If it doesn't work, oh well...You
tried..That's the used tranny gamble and no way to tell otherwise for sure.

Thanks Mark.
As for robustness, AA-Daryl's had kindly pmailed the same opinion.
Interesting to note that the buggy guys use them. Looking at both the
DK an AB, I wondered if the nose couldn't be swapped out.
What's making the decision difficult is that I only drove the WBX AB
for a short distance. IIRC, it "caught" in all forward gears but
stayed in gear. Could have been due to brake MC starting to fail
(though I really can't see how unless fluid really low air allowed in
clutch hydraulics) or due to the TOB which seemed to be incorrectly
installed by PO. Or ?
DK wasn't driven. Just pulled it along with
lot-o-parts-fora-great-price a while back.
Shifting and turning both by hand, all gears work. No excessive play
at input shaft. But. Shifting DK and AB by hand on bench, AB seems to
shift harder and noisier. DK smoother/quieter. AB has slight noise in
neutral turning the flanges only. I assume this is the diff. DK does
not.
Clutch housing wear seems similar. (cross shaft bushings)
I guess it just boils down to installing and trying them out. Worst
case: I end up with a shortened shift linkage. And I bet that could
easily be put back to spec.
