In answer to Al and Andrew both..My target rpm for a TDI re-gear is 3000 rpm..Seems to be a good compromise between torque, HP and drivability. Do some with a 1.09 - 3rd or a .77-4th, but do most with the 1.14 and .70 to go with our US 4.86 R&P. I do the Greasewrks rebuilds and I frequently chat with the customer as well as Justin to figure tire size, weight and general driving preferences. Yes, they will pull from 2K, but on the highway you run out of pure torque so to speak and need some eng speed HP to even out the gearing..Might not be the best way to put it, but I call it "momentum RPM" and it seems to work from the guys I talk with after the fact. As always, everyone has differing needs and wants..Al Pokes along in the slow lane and Eric Didier is NEVER in the slow lane..And of late, I am somewhere in the middle starting to watch the poppies go by (not pushing the Daisies..yet)..

What is your opinion on a good superslab rpm for the modern TDI? 3000?

In my doddering old poppy watching driving style, I rarely push it past 70mph usually just wobble along at a comfortable 65 (avoids those annoying little pieces of paper that say summons on em) As we know my current gearing is 5.43 with 215/75-15. with a .77 4th. After all it is a 5000lb truck.

With low ratios like that you'd need a TALL diff ratio or be unable to break 100kmh!
