If you want any more on the persuasion front, here's some (more relevant to
the camping-with-kids plan, but hey, maybe you could borrow some if you
don't have any):
The whole reason I own a vanagon is because when I was a kid, we lived in
Germany a couple years, and one year we were driving (some kind of loan deal
with someone who was in the states while we were there) some kind of VW
camper (next time I'm at home I'll get some pictures scanned in), and the
memories of going to the campgrounds in Europe and making peppermint tea and
frittaten suppe (in american that's "chicken noodle soup where the noodles
are actually made out of very thin pancakes"
http://www.ciao.de/Knorr_Kaiser_Teller_Frittaten_Suppe__2429802 ) on the
stove are for me kind of the definition of idyllic childhood. I was either
6 or 7 at the time, so from my experience that's a great time to build this
kind of memories with your kids. Hopefully with enough of these kinds of
times you'll avoid the worst of that period you referred to when you become
incredibly stupid, and behind-the-times, and out of touch with modern
reality, and
not-remotely-cognizant-of-the-importance-of-how-fun-something-is-in-deciding-whether-it's-worth-the-risk-or-expense
(in Germany they would turn that into a single word--they have some kind of
advanced verbal technology over there where they just delete the hyphens and
add it to the dictionary, I guess).
Anyway. Absolutely in the very tip top of my memories of childhood--go for
it!
