Back in the late 80s/early 90's I fought fires in both in the Park and on either side of the Tetons. My first suggestion to anyone who doesn't particularly like the traffic in the summer in the park is to take a look at the National Forest Service land, mostly Targhee NF, just west of Yellowstone and GTNP. There some really great places to see if you're willing to drive down dirty forest roads.

My wife and I took our honeymoon in YSNP in the middle of the winter. Two weeks of back country skiing and the population of the whole basin never exceeded our yurt camp, plus a couple of bombardier coaches in the daytime. Frankly, that's the only time in my opinion to visit the Park.

Yep, I agree- Yellowstone campsites suck for the most part, but we traveled during the height of the season four years ago and had the best time.

It was our second trip, and this time we were able to stay put for as long as we liked- I believe we did a week there. What was fascinating to us was how much the place had changed in 10 years.

For us, the Norris Geyser Basin is a major draw...
