At the time - Mr. Gable shocked the world with his on screen comment. The movie going public was stunned. Of course what this is all about is the changing of language and definitions over time. Villain is an "olde" English term meaning farmer, basically. Today it is a bad guy. Things change - but good taste rarely does.
