Subject: Vanagon Road Trippin in the New year!
Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed
Well the Wife and I have to plan our Vacations around many things
this coming year.
Last year we went camping in the smokey mountains in the winter in
the snow. Minimal crowds wonderful camping fun with my 2 girls and
wife. We then took a Family Vacation (Wifes Family) on a Alaskan Cruise.
This year my wife stated for "spring break" we are going to Outer
Banks. Looked at pictures on line and route to take and all since I
personally have never been there. So, Sure why Not the Westy vanagon
has it's zetec out back and it is running like a champ, No worries.
So off for a week at the outer banks. All is good!
Well, My wife stated what are we going to do for our Summer Camping
Trip this year?? I said " Outer Banks?, Right?
I was informed that was our "Spring" Vacation. Oh, I replied. So,
What do you want to do for "Summer Vacation"??
Well, She wants to go to yellow stone, Grand Tetons and someplace
else I have never been to. I checked mapquest and it showed 1800
Miles 1 way from Southeastern Michigan. 4500 miles approx for the
whole trip. She proceeded to say we will "Fly, Rent a Car, Stay at
Hotels and Eat out every Meal!"
I asked going rate on airline tickets and it is ONLY 500.00 per
person 1 WAY times 4, then we have to fly back. I began to loose
interest in seeing anything out that direction so we could still eat,
and have a home when we got back, This would be vacationing beyond
our means and blasting through serious coin Fast!!
So, I mentioned what about the Vanagon Camper?? We broke down the
basic miles for Gas, Food, really doesn't matter since we have to eat
anyway but at least we wouldn't have to eat out every flippin meal.
We could actually see the country from the Ground instead of 20,000
feet. We figured Time of 2 weeks plus the "extra weekend" for travel
and being tourists. Cost in fuel would be approx $600.00 to $700.00.
My wife Grinned and said she liked that Idea! Long days on the road
just driving and enjoying. Not to say there won't be fighting,
Crying, Hitting. But, I will enjoy the other side of the coin,
Laughing, Smiling, Looking, Camping, Hiking, Fishing and Driving. The
memories will last forever and I want to still enjoy my kids now 7
and 10, while they still enjoy me. From what I understand, That I
will soon Know Nothing, and be hated/disliked and good for nothing.
So, I guess I better take the 2 weeks off while I still can.
As time comes close to Late July and early August I will try to give
a better idea of route to see if anyone On the route could lend a
hand if needed. I hope to not "need" anything. But, To have the
comfort of knowing it is there is all I really need. The Vanagon has
been Prepped and made camp ready for the past few years. I have a
couple things I want to rebuild to take any questions off my mind for
the travel.
Should be fun. My wife called her parents, I guess she is excited
about sitting in the VW for Hours and Hours.
All in good fun!
