Subject: Which lock cylinder is for what & pics of power vs. non-power
              hatch lock
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Good morning, everyone:

Too much caffeine encouraged curiosity in the middle the night which got me performing some amateur Vanagon archeology. Some years ago, I came upon a stash of NOS ignition locks, handles, and lock cylinders for Vanagons. A portion of that group was a pile of mismatched locks & keys not to mention handles with lock cylinders removed and/or missing. When Kim Springer asked for a handle to replace his damaged one, his request coincided with my preparations to send the whole mess to Steve Sandlin for matching and/or re-keying. I was able to match up quite a few and re-keyed the simple ones myself. Eventually, the rest will wing it's way to Texas to Steve's Lock Shoppe.

Now here's my question. The following photo shows three different lock cylinders. I know the one with the square ends are for the doors. I am not so sure about the other two (slider too, maybe?). I am speculating that the one with the smooth oval end is for the rear hatch whilst the two pronged deal is for the ignition. It just seems logical but one or more of you probably knows just by looking at them. Sorry for the low-res pics. I used my phone for quick photos.

Just for the heck of it, I took a pic to show the difference between the hatch locks. The fancy looking one is for the ones with powerlocks. The plain Jane is the manual lock version. Since I haven't disassembled a rear hatch lock before, I am operating under the assumption that that lock is complete. My thanks to Bus Depot for posting pics on their website which I used to help ID the different locks.
