Well, I finally got the convergence of daylight and no rain and no overriding obligations and was able to spend some time working on the van.  Key on, there was no fuel pump noise and no voltage at the fuel pump.  The pump itself is very recent so I proceeded with the easiest first step and replaced one of the two 53 relays in the engine compartment black box and it fired right up.  I won't fool myself into thinking it is fixed for good, but this is a very positive sign and I'll enjoy it until another no-start instance occurs, at which time I can troubleshoot further.  Thanks for the input.  I'm sure there'll be more questions later.
