The inner tie rod end doesn't not get tightened or adjusted unless it has started to unscrew. There is not much thread here so this is a problem. I can have play for quite a while before safety is a concerned. When replacing you need to be real careful you do not put any twisting load on the rack gear. This can damage the rack. Play on the inside can also be an indication the rack is shot. If you see any up/down motion the end bushings need to be checked.

I have a bit of play in the tie rod assembly. It's at the inside one, where it connects to the steering box, I assume that it is worn and needs replacing. Is it possible to tighten this up a bit until the new parts arrive on Tuesday? I need to be able to use the Vanagon until then. Any input would be greatly appreciated. TIA, Paul
