That's what I was thinking -- bad gas -- worth a look. Has happened to me 3 times, to the point where I only buy gas at the busiest truck stops on an interstate. I was stuck in Alabama once on a tight deadline to get home --- the VW dealer mechanics tried everything they could think of while I begged them to check the gas. These were good guys who both owned type 2's but it was Friday at 5 pm. After a couple of hours they decided that it was indeed bad gas -- drained the tank -- put in some fuel conditioner and, of course, fresh gas -- and I was on my way.

A really quick thing to try would be to dump in a whole bunch of fuel-line antifreeze (Heet) which will take the water out of the gas. Don't stop at one bottle, use 3 or 4 -- fire it up and see what happens. Worth a try. If there is too much water in the gas this won't work. But if the engine starts running a little better you know you're on the right track. BTDT too many times........

Cheers, Doug
