Whew! I'm dizzy from Bentley and Vanagons and defogger switches!

Bentley shows my '81 with only three wires and one bulb in the switch. However, actual inspection showes the same setup as later models--4 wires. ETKA shows only one switch for all years.

I was certain the white graphic on my '81 was just printed on. When I took the switch apart I found two bulbs.

Got my '87 back and turned on the headlights--and the graphic lit up on the switch, controled by the dimmer. The bulb for showing the fogger is "on" is dead. Maybe on the '81 the bulb for the graphic is dead.

I think I've gotten deeper into this than I wanted!
