You really have to be specific when asking a question like this. For example, there are at least four different types of seats available on Vanagons for 1987 that I can think of. And I am not talking about upholstery material. Whilst just about any of them can be installed in any year, the level of complexity can differ widely.

If you are talking about a basic GL 82 and installing the Weekender GL (not the Westy type) bench from an 87, then sure. Plug and play. If you ate talking about a Wolfsburg Edition 87 with the folding table and plastic panels, there are provisions that need to be made to accommodate the slightly narrower bench. Plenty of info in the archives on this.

Heck, you can install Westy benches in there too if you want. Somehow, I think you are talking van benches. If you specify your model, this answer would be less hypothetical and more to the point.
