My personal theory at that mileage is to drain and change filter..If the fluid you drain out is very dirty with metal particles in it..Bewar4e..Its soon time for a rebuild (I don't do automatic). I have been told that the new fluid will tend to eat old clutch plates if the trans has very high mileage on it.. 150K plus I have been told by some..Others say change it and drive it till it goes.. Sounds like a crap shoot to me, but I tend to change and see. On my newer Ferd rigs..It gets changed initially at 60K and without fail every 30K after that....oil every 3K..coolant every 30K..get the picture?? Preventative maint. is key.. Do your Vanagon manual trannies every 2 yrs or 30K MAX YMMV of course Daryl of AA Transaxle 425-788-4070 "On the cutting edge of Old technology"

Vanagoners,

I'm curious for your recommendations.

My '84 Westfalia automatic transmission runs just fine. The van has 114k original miles, and has had very little transmission maintenance, save for an occasional topping off of fluid.

Should I leave well enough alone, r/r filter and fluid, or have the thing power flushed?

Thanks. kevin
