Subject:      What is the purpose of syncro gas tank insulation?

I am currently wrapping up a syncro gas tank removal, clean up, refurb,
and reinstall.  I had to rip all of the old insulation that was wrapped
around the fuel tank in order to get it out so I am going to be putting
some new insulation back, however, I was curious if anyone knows the
actual reason for the insulation?  Is it just for sound deadening?  Does
it serve some other purpose that isn't obvious?  What have others used
to replace the original insulation (which I destroyed taking the old
tank out)?  Any advice would be appreciated as always.
