The key is you went to "have the house battery replaced". And whomever you talked to looked at your Vanagon and stated "They wouldn't touch it!".

They are stating they won't work on your Vanagon.

We are discussing buying & swapping batteries and most likely everyone else was discussing bringing in the battery in by itself, at least I was.

I can't believe all of the folks with positive experiences. Here's mine: I went to Wal-Mart to have the house [aux] battery replaced. They wouldn't touch it! I asked to speak to a supervisor and he confirmed that they "wouldn't work on those."

This was in scenic Simi Valley, CA.
