James,

The main indication is the binding up while turning the steering wheel or if the wheel won't return to center on it's own. When you slide under the van look at the power steering rack and then you will see the universal joint that attaches to it. If the joint looks really rusty or you can see powdery rust at the joints then that is another indicator. You can have someone turn the steering wheel while you watch the joint and if you see any play in it whatsoever, it is shot. Hope his helps, Ken Wilford John 3:16 www.vanagain.com
