you're on the right track Michael. but it's hydraulic clutch in a vanagon .

most likely either the clutch slave or clutch master cylinder has gone south.

the easy one to check if the van is buried in snow, is look for wetness around the pedal area. You can just glimpse the bottom of the clutch master cylinder. wouldn't hurt to check the reservoir under the instrument cluster cover ...brake and clutch share the same res.
