all true, but it sure is fun reading a 'you really don't want to buy this' warning up front . very refreshing, humorous even.

and poor toyota, where once you could buy a toyota in the 80's for very few thousand dollars new, and it would just run forever and forever . like a Corolla or Pick up truck ........300,000 miles easily, even with abuse. now, they have actually stopped production and sales of many models over this gas pedal glitch. Unprecedented !! and they lost money in 07 or 08 for the first time in corporate history. they be slippin'. the once mighty............................. It all started to slide when they started making them in the US, I say.

we should write to Toyota and beseech them to make a more or less copy of the vanagon, and sell that. Just updated some, but nothing too weird, or roundy, or with crazy features. Just a good handy box with good ground clearance, good handling, spunk, etc.

but I like that ad. Just the pure honesty is refreshing ! and they are not that bad quite, but I wouldn't touch an air-cooled vanagon. They are too old and not that well sorted even stock , in my opinion. Waterboxers ain't bad. They take some special care and understanding is all.

VROOOOOM !

I couldn't just read and dismiss the 'disclaimer' that is a part of this auction :

>Disclaimer: Vanagons are not reliable, they are hard to find parts for, hard to find people to work on them, they get horrible gas mileage, they are bad for the environment, and they aren't safe. In short they are for car collectors and not people serious about traveling or transportation.

I concur with the lousy mileage claim, but that's only in it's stock configuration. Actually, if you upgrade to a modern power plant, keeping it on the road and not replacing it, you've pretty much ruled out the mileage and environmental issues, when compared with what's out there. As far as the safety aspect, if you read this forum, you should feel pretty safe in a Vanagon. I have never experienced the other issues mentioned and, as far as 'not for serious travelers,' I've driven my vans further into the bleak unknown than most have, in their comfy, reliable Toyotas. A show of hands from this forum would prove some very serious travelers! I mean sheesh! (can I say that?) Miguel
