Of course changing the oil without a filter means that new oil is contaminated with some oil and that surge of new oil may have washed some of the dirt on the filter element through it. Otherwise go for it. You won't lose much. Be sure not to overfill when topping it off. Between the marks is good. The top marl is not the full mark. It is the "do not exceed no matter what mark".
