The Sharan was based on the B3 platform, same as the 1990's Passat. I think the basic design of the platform was good. I don't know any particulars about reliability. Sometimes these consumer polls fail to distinguish between big and small problems. (Ie I've had VW cars with electrical gremlins in sunroofs, power windows and the like. To me those are fixable annoyances in an otherwise good car. To the average consumer they mean an expensive trip to the dealer of course)

When I lived in Europe in 2006-7 the Passat B3 and Sharan was on my potential car list, but I didn't find a good shape/low milage one. Those who were on the list three years ago might recall that I eventually bought a Vanagon Westy and toured eight countries in my summer vacation...

On paper the Sharan still looks attractive to me. Smaller than minivans on the north american market. Bigger than a station wagon. Good for my wife who refuses to drive the vanagon, didn't particularly care for the T4 we had some years, but sometimes needs more space than in the station wagon.
