there is a trend in modern gasoline cars toward turbo's again ... mainly for good power out of a more fuel -effecient smaller engine. Turbo's are way cool. Totally magic........that it's a very aerodynamic device .....not even physically connected by rods or whatever to the engine . More complexiity too. especially if an intercooler is fitted. turbo's can wear out. And idiot driving the snot out of a turbo engine, gas or diesel, can ruin the turbo and engine in not too long a period if they really want to. The oil needs to be better, it needs to be changed more, turob's need to be cooled down a bit before shut down. And the whole engine is built with having a turbo on it in mind - lower compression ratio, piston oil scquirters, oil cooler etc. my personal 'fast car' is an 88 turbo 740 Volvo sedan. Deomon of a car. Steers like a fighter plane, has gearing and power galore. And it's only about 160 hp, not evne much these days. It's totally happey at 80+ mph, has ABS vented disc brakes and all kinds of luxury and performance goodies on it. It actully has 4 coolers on it besides the radiator. An engine oil cooler, an intercooler the size of the radiator, a air transmission oil cooler, and trans oil cooling through the radiator too. Man, if a vanagon could steer and go like that car .....and that is 20 year old tech now too ! last paragraph -re inline 4 cylinder gas engines in vanagons. I have this 87 Jetta 1.8 16 valve engine I want to put in my own vanagon someday, when I find time . quote unquote. OK....peaky little engine, 123 hp at about 5,800 rpm. I'm poking around this VW shop I just discovered the other day. I see an engine lot like my 16 valve 1.8. I ask the guy what it is. It's from a 92 jetta, and it's a two liter, And uses EFI rather than the CIS-E mine has. sounding better already. then, the guy tells me, he's going to reubilt it with stronger rods, forged lower compression pistons, and turbo it ! And he shows me a turbo off a 1.8 T modern VW gas turbo engine ... probably more of a 'screamer' than I need, but ....really 'turbo is fun.' I ran my volvo sans-turbo for about 2 years. Ran just fine, still went as fast as I could want. but when I got the turbo back on ... suddenly the response to throttle input is Exponential.... you give it say 60 % throttle ...that developes into 75 % as the boost comes on. or more. Very fun that way. Turbo gas in fun. That's what Subaru WRX's are.......and they can be pushed to totally obscene levels of power. 'Ken Black' ...I think that's the name ....check out some of his hot WRX videos. Enough power to spin all four wheels 'all the time' ......almost at any speed. Those cars have cockpit adjustble front-rear bias on the AWD ... you can go from 0 front and 100 % rear, to anywhere in between. Just turn a little knob on the console.
