David,

The best method I have found over the years is to heat the nut up with a nice torch for a minute then try it again. If it doesn't budge, heat it again for another minute. Go around it and try to avoid heating up the stud as much as you can. Then squirt some PB Blaster into the threads. It will shock cool the stud some which should help things. What you are trying to do is use the expansion of the nut to break the bond that has developed between the nut and the stud over the years. I have had to heat things up several times but they always come apart eventually. Since it is a stud another way to go is to get a very sharp chisel and split the nut that way. A good chisel can split a nut in two or three hits, and you don't have to worry about space like with a nut splitter.

I am telling you the heat works though. It is simple science. There is even a new thing you can buy from NAPA which is a can of ultra cold spray. I want to buy this and try the torch and the ultra cold spray together. Heat up the nut, then spray the stud with the cold spray. With just the torch many times the nut become finger tight so I can imagine what the cold spray would do.

Hope this helps.
