Bought a wrecked (front end damage) 89 manual 2wd for 2500.00. Had a
recent GoWesty 2.3 (installed by GW.) Ran super strong and super
reliable, plus it still had around 40,000K miles warranty (which I
confirmed was transferable from owner to buyer, plus it was ok to put
it in one of my Syncros, which I never did.) At 6500+ elevation it was
a strong runner, spunky as hell, that easily merged with traffic. It
was a bargain at 2500, but would I pay the 4000.00 approx. to GW for a
new one. I would do it if I had a very nice van that deserved it, no
question. Delicious little motor that had more umff than any other VW
flat four I've ever owned and I've owned quite a few. Of course, my
style may be different from the majority, though I've never taken a
poll. If the vehicle has certain qualities, I'm happy to throw that
kind of money at it.....so long as it's a Vanagon. I simply love them
and it's gone well beyond the practical approach. I've spent nasty
amounts of money on them, driven and enjoyed them, then sold for a
good price, usually paying for themselves. In short, it's a beautiful
platform, that, when tweaked to your tastes, can yield great pleasure
at bargain prices. Sadly I sold this one when we sold our big house in
the mountains. Trimmed the fleet from 11 to 2, but now it's on the
rise again.....happily.

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

I've tried killing the mildew with Lysol which seemed to work pretty well but I can't get rid of the nasty-looking dark splotches. I've tried fabric spray with bleach, spray carpet & upholstery cleaner, and simple green with a brush. Nothing works... and I don't want to scrub too hard and rub off the 'velvet'.
