A lot of malls and shopping centers have WiFi you can use in their food court or children's play area if one is available. Also many books stores like Borders and Barnes & Noble have it.

I've been able to a signal from the mall and from Borders' parking lots at times and just sat in my car without even going inside to use it. ;-)
