Let's not assume it always goes in this direction.  My wife is the one pushing for a TDI to replace our 1.6L NA diesel.  Does this mean that if I acquiesce she'll buy me a new set of Zipp 404s and a PowerTap out of the deal?

Vanagon.

The formula is simple. Figure purchase price of Vanagon and/or Vanagon item.
Multiply
that by at least 150% and buy gift for significant other at that price.
