On March 1st I got a list message originating from gneiss9@gmail.com (Trevor Reynolds) that had a .txt attachment with it. I was surprised to see it knowing that the list strips attachments. I didn't open it. I get my list mail now from my gmail account via Outlook; that is, the mail goes to gmail and then Outlook retrieves it much as it would from any other mail server. I thought that perhaps gmail had something to do with the attachment but I have no way of knowing. My virus scanner scans my incoming mail but gave no alerts in this case. Since the listserv strips ALL attachments, the likelihood that you're getting viruses through the list is exceedingly small. IOW, it ain't from vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com or from vanagon@yahoogroups.com. No way, no how. The only traffic relayed is ascii text. That's why we strip the attachments.
