The Vanagon list members come through once again. I've been able to negotiate the acquisition of the two items I was looking for, and received some high quality diagnostic suggestions for the "sudden rich" fuel injection issue.

Over the weekend we had some nice weather, and I managed to get the "sudden rich" syndrome to appear. I pulled the Temp II sensor out of the thermostat housing, and jumped the connectors (to simulate hot engine) and the engine immediately smoothed out and quit smoking. On this basis, I'm going to go after the Temp II sensor. I replaced this sensor about 4K miles ago (2 yrs ago), and this one tests within range. Seems like it works OK when cold, then has an intermittent open when the engine is at operating temp. Although I don't like throwing parts at a problem when I don't have a firm diagnosis, I think the sudden disappearance of the symptoms when bypassing this sensor it as close as I'm going to get to a firm diagnosis. I know there's been a lot of commentary on the Vanagon list about issues with these sensors testing OK but not working right. Hopefully, this is my problem.

Once I had it running smoothly, and let it warm up I found a fouled sparkplug and a broken coolant hose clamp at the water pump which was causing a weep between the small hose and the water pump. It was nice to have the time and a relatively warm day to just get in there and fiddle around.

I recall a recent discussion on the list about Control Units with an 'E' suffix to the part number. Mine is apparently the original Control Unit, and has no suffix behind the part number. Is there consensus on the list as to whether or not there is value in installing the updated control unit?

*Thanks again, Jon B Kanas
