i would say if your boots are tearing and it's not from offroading, something is wrong. They should (if installed properly) last for at least 5 years/50K miles. I have seen alot of people install them either sprung (Twisted on the axle in a relaxed position), or with the adjustable end position in one of the two extremes (too far out on the axle or too far in).
