Many parts books list the Audi thermostat as being correct for the Vanagon. The lower or bypass disc on those is wrong (too large) and can stick in the housing after opening. You could try another part store or maybe a dealer is close by.

dear thermostat people

yes thermostat is not hard to obtain ... but i am dealing with a parts store that inssits the one he gave is correct clearly it is not ... i even went back with calipers to show differences but he says it is what the paper book and the computer says to put in i am not into wasting my day arguing with a guy i need other parts from ...

i can likely get p[roper part three or four hours north of here but may have to wait til i get home yours
