Even with a discounted AFM new, and other expensive parts for the aging waterboxer motor, the Haltech( or other engine management systm) sounds more feasable all the time. Ebay has lots of them for sale, new and used, and if you can still do DOS on your computer, an old F-9 or E6S unit will do just fine. The windows-based systems are a little more money, but have cool 3D graphics if that sort of thing turns you on.

My Haltech(an older E6S) runs on a MAP sensor/Throttle Position Sensor with air temp and coolant temp input. It also allows you to design your own spark advance curve.
