I suppose aircraft are or will be switching over to electronically logged repair and maintenance records... but ....'the Forms' as they are called, or were when I was in the AF and worked on aircraft .. that is 'the book' that is always with the airplane, unless it's being written in by maintenance people.

The crew chief hands it to the pilot before flight - it flies with the aircraft, then it's handed back to ground personnel for the next work phase, after the flight, etc. Even Scully ...the now famous pilot who ditched in the Hudson River last January after making sure everyone was off the aircraft , he grabbed the maintenance forms/ book.

Paper can't 'crash' either of course. ( like hard drives can, like discs can fail too. Stored online somewhere .....that's probably more reliable. Paper has it's place - I'd rather use a 'real' Shop Repair manual that you can hold in your hands and get all greasy than something online you can only see one screen at a time. Both have their place and uses of course. )
