Years ago I was pretty comfortable on the top bunk, even though it only has about 2 inches of dense foam as a mattress. As I'm approaching 60, with some arthritis in my hips and knees, I find that I'm spending the whole night rolling around trying to find a non-existent soft spot. I bought the Memory Foam mattress topper from GoWesty. It's a bit pricey, but adds quite a bit to the comfort. It's little effort to fold into quarters in the morning, and fits nicely in the back part of the upper berth where the foldover doesn't reach. It also offers the advantage of being secured within a mattress cover, which can easily be removed for laundering.

We used to use a man-made down substitute comforter beneath us. This is cushier. Only problem is it doesn't overlap the metal hinges, which tend to get a bit chilly in the night. Gotta create some "wings" for the mattress topper so we don't get "zinged" in the middle of the night.

Bottom berth is actually more comfortable, but we perefer the top due to the softer sides giving the illusion of a wider bed.
